Now that the site is up and running some have asked where the custom RSS logo came from. It was actually an in house design but has some very real roots in existing artwork. We asked our artist to come up with a quick list of inspiration for where he finds good graphics. Here’s what he had to say:
When I’m looking to redesign something that already exists chances are there are a lot of users out there that have already done the same thing. I have a few different sites that I like to check for cool graphics/designs. The first is Flickr.
Flickr is already the largest repository for pictures that has ever existed in the history of time. Not a bad title to own. Their users come from every walk of life but you can usually find original designs and interesting images to get inspiration from.
Another site that I’m a big fan of is Deviantart. Their focus is on real art and they have no restrictions on their users (their site contains nudity) but they have a great tool for finding Creative Commons licensed work. Goto their site and search for RSS, there are a lot of cool designs on there.
Finally, I think we’ve all used google image search. Depending on the topic you’ll have about a 30% relevancy rate for whatever you’re looking for.
There you have it, that’s how it’s done; that and photoshop. There is however a law that goes along with image searches, we will call it “Logo’s Law.” No matter what type of image you’re searching for there will always be a random picture of a beautiful girl. No one knows why, that’s just the way it is.
