When the geothermal heating and cooling systems are combined with a solar electric system, these units can provide a zero emission and pollution alternative to the waste created by burning natural gas or propane in a furnace and the electricity used to cool a home.  Contrary to popular beliefs, the use of electricity is not as environmentally friendly as some might think.  To create electricity, many power generating plants burn natural gas or coal, creating greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and monoxide as well as particulates infusing some serious air pollution.

 nother alternative method to cool and heat homes that is energy efficient and reduces or completely eliminates heating and cooling bills is the use of a closed loop system utilizing geothermal heating.  This is not the use of geysers to generate steam heat, but the use of the natural temperature of the earth at about six feet below the surface of the earth to cool and heat homes.  Polyethylene pipes are buried under the ground either vertically or horizontally in three to six foot trenches.  Then water or an anti-freeze mix is pumped through the pipes. During the winter, the pipes collect heat from the earth and carry it through the system of pipes back through the home.  In the summertime, the pipes transmit heat into the earth and carry coolness into the building.  By implementing a geothermal system in Toronto instead of a traditional HVAC system, homeowners can save thirty to fifty percent on their heating bills.  Initial setup costs can be higher, but are sometimes offset by government financial incentives like tax credits, tax deductions, and utility rebates. 

Finding the right place to call home can be a unique challenge.  When buying a home, there can sometimes be an issue with the location of the property boundaries.  Markers that were once defined as the property lines can have shifted over the years since being laid out, or the line could have been laid out incorrectly.  One method of measuring boundary lines is called metes and bounds.  This system was a carryover from the old English measurement system. 

 This method of surveying has been largely replaced in the Western part of the United States, but still exists in the Eastern part and in Canada.  However, when pieces of land became bigger, the ability to measure everything out with rods and poles became harder.  In the mapping out of different properties, using Global Positioning Satellites offers a way to be certain of the placement of anything and any place.  A GPS surveying system offers a very precise way to chart boundary lines of any place, anywhere on earth. 

 There is a form of treasure hunting that has evolved from the use of GPS technology.  Using simple GPS coordinates, a person locates and discovered a geo cache of different items.  The advent of being able to use a system like Google Maps, Google Earth, or any other mapping program to find a point in the middle of a desert, and then using a GPS program to find that place on the ground allows for many advances.  Many different mineral companies have started to use broad area scans to examine a place that might have resources. 

 They then examine the scans to see areas that have abnormalities like magnetic discrepancies and places that don’t look quite right.  Using GPS offers a way to be able to ensure the claims on the land the minerals are discovered are precise and exact in the coverage of the mineral claims.  While old time gold miners might have relied on luck and some skill in the past to find areas that had the minerals they were looking for, the use of modern technology and tools can ensure the claim would be properly filed and protected for the person who discovered it.  GPS survey equipment gives an accurate recording of the area being claimed, whether for a mining and minerals claim, or for a place to call home, using accurate GPS surveying equipment makes a precise difference.

When I was a child, we had an elementary school science fair.  Our whole year, we had been studying sustainable sources of energy, and I took a special interest in solar power.  It did not make any sense to me that we were continually bathed in the sun’s energy, yet every type of fuel we were using was either non-sustainable, environmentally detrimental, or downright hazardous.  Solar energy did not require the burning of any substance, gave off no toxic byproducts, and involved practically no risk to those who were managing or using it.  As long as the sun would shine, there would be an inexhaustible supply of energy for a little to no cost to the consumer.

 For my project, I decided to build a solar water heater in Pheonix.  At the time, I had no access to solar power cells, so I would have to use conventional power for that, but that was not important to my experiment.  I wanted to prove that the sun alone could heat water rapidly and efficiently, which could then be used for a number of purposes.  Consulting with my father, we built a small wooden box with a glass panel.  Inside the box, we installed a coil of copper tubing that extended to holes on either side of the box.  From there, we connected regular plastic tubing to a pump, controlled by a small rheostat regulator to control the speed of the flow of water.  The control, which was a five gallon bucket, would be kept out of direct sunlight and at room temperature. 

 I would run the solar water heater from noon to 1 PM every day for a week, checking the temperature of the water in the control once every five minutes.  The data was then compiled to show the consistency to the increase in water temperature.  The second phase of the experiment ran the same test at different times of the day and at different water speeds to track other variables.  I was able to prove the sun would heat the water to our target temperature, and with the inclusion of solar cells, the experiment could be run from sunrise to sunset with no draw from the outside grid.  Essentially, I could make water hot all day long.

 While a very simple experiment, I was able to show that solar water can be heated effectively to be used in climate control, heating swimming pools, or even just making a cup of tea.  Our long term energy solutions can be found in the environment, and our sun is chief among those solutions.

In today’s schools, much of what is taught is through memorization and regurgitation.  Higher order thinking has been lost in our curriculum of rote learning.  It is imperative that students learn through evaluating and disseminating information.  If we only teach students to regurgitate, we lose the ability to progress in our thinking and advancement. 

 In times gone by students were taught philosophy, analysis, reasoning, and critical thinking.  We have to give students the opportunity to problem solve, take information, and draw inferences and deductions from it.  We need to teach them to compare and contrast information and draw parallels for their own lives.  Higher order thinking helps students dissect the past and plan more fully for their futures. 

 Reading is the key to knowledge, understanding what to do with that knowledge is the next step.  An interesting study was done with troubled girls in an inner city.  The girls were given the choice to serve time in community service or attend a book club.  The book club was directed by a teacher who acted as a mediator for the discussion.  She would choose books about broken homes, drug abuse, or other social ills that may be affecting the girl’s personal lives.  The directive was the girls were not allowed to talk about their personal struggles, only those of the characters in the book. 

 As the reading groups continued the girls became fascinated by their ability to problem solve, seek solutions, understand problems, and see parallels in their own lives.  The ability to take information and use it gave them the tools necessary to solve problems in their own lives.  The program was a tremendous success.

 If we have the ability to assimilate information and use it, we can help others, help ourselves, and understand the great minds of the past.  One will never understand the minds of Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle if one has only learned to memorize and regurgitate.  Knowledge must be dissected, studied, analyzed, and meditated upon to grasp.  Knowledge applied is true knowledge.

 We need to help teachers develop and refine their students’ higher order thinking skills.  There are websites that can help train and teach these skills.  The models used when teaching psychology are explanatory modeling activities to help students achieve a deeper understand of their world.  We need to reintroduce analysis, reasoning, philosophy, and critical thinking into our school to give our students the tools they need to succeed.

LEED is an internationally recognized certification classification recognizing green building.  It provides third party verification that a building or community was designed and built to improve performance across all the metrics that matter most: CO2 emissions reduction, energy savings, water efficiency, and improved indoor environmental quality and stewardship of resources including sensitivity to their impact.

 Creating green buildings needs to be the goal of all new projects.  In the United States buildings account for 72% of electricity consumption, 39% of energy use, 38% of all carbon dioxide emissions, 40% of raw materials use, 30% of waste output, (136 million tons annual) and 14% of potable water consumption.  LEED can apply to all building types, both residential and commercial.  It works throughout the building lifecycle from design to construction, operation and maintenance, tenant fill out, and major retrofits.

  Texas LEED buildings are innovative and leading the way for the nation in being environmentally conscience.  LEED stands for Leadership in Energy & Environment Design.  It is a voluntary, consensus-based standard to support and certify successful green building designs, constructions, and operations. 

 This certification program was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and incorporates over 7,000 projects in the United States and 30 countries.  Almost 20,000 members are included in the organization.  It was developed in 1998.

 To be Texas LEED certified you need a company that specializes in the certifications.  Services should include: Fundamental commissioning, enhanced commissioning, retro-commissioning, energy auditing, energy modeling, day lighting analysis, facilitation of eco-charrettes, LEED process assistance, LEED project assistance, LEED project administration, LEED documentation, LEED multifamily NC expertise, indoor air quality testing, and green specifications. 

How can you smoke a cigarette without a lighter, tobacco, or smoke? You use a smokeless cigarette. My birthday is tomorrow, and to be honest, I really would not be that aware of it if I had not started to receive congratulatory messages on my social media pages.  The bombardment started a day early, since my friends in New Zealand and Australia are a day ahead.  I know from past experience that before the next few days are finished, my various social media walls will be filled with messages from dear friends, distant acquaintances, and a mass of others from strangers I only know because we have some shared interests.  I’ll do my best to reply to them all, and would not mind if I had a ten dollar bill for everyone that wished me a happy birthday. 

 There are some of the closer people in my life who have started to ask me what I want.  I am one of those people who more or less feels like he has everything, so to make things interesting, I have decided to ask everyone for gift baskets from Calgary.  Most people expect me to ask for a book or a gift certificate, but this year, I have been asking for gift baskets.  A couple of the surprised people have asked me why I would want that over anything else, and my reasons are simple.

 For starters, the gift is always unique.  No two gift baskets are alike, and so I know that I will not have to worry about having duplicates or feel the need to return a gift or regift it to someone else.  Plus, gift baskets are generally filled with food, and that means that I can share them with the rest of my family.  My wife and children will be more than happy to dig into those gift baskets with me.  Being a guy, the other things that fill the basket tend to be man-things, so shaving lotion, aftershave, cologne, and things like that are always a favorite and always come in handy.

 The thing I am most interested in is the basket itself.  I have seen all kinds, from the cheap plastic Easter baskets to some that seem to be made from fine leather.  I have no idea what I will be getting, but that is part of the fun.  They should start pouring in tomorrow, and I think because of that, I am more excited about this birthday than I have been in years.

There have been many advances in technology going across many different fields.  Global positioning systems have revolutionized things as diverse as luggage delivery and land surveying equipment.  GPS survey equipment can have important legal uses to determine property lines and recover minerals.  With improved record keeping systems, the importance of knowing where one property ends and another begins is vital to long term security.  Geographic information systems rely on capturing, storing, analyzing, managing, and presenting data for geographic understanding. Merging cartography, statistical analysis, and databases offer significant advantages over the old ways of collecting and crunching data. 

 Getting the right information at the right time and the right place will be increasingly important in the world of the future.  Buildings must be built in precise locations in many different cities.  This is especially important to building projects that can involve multi-million dollar investments.  Being off by inches at the base can affect the stability and safety of the whole project.  While there have always been surveyors who measure and make certain a project is laid out as it should be, the quality of their equipment has improved over the centuries from a simple plumb, level, square, and compass to GPS surveying equipment, scanners, total stations, digital levels, leveling lasers, and other land surveying equipment. 

 Having the ability to measure the area of a building project makes the length of time to complete a project decrease sharply.  Calculating lengths, coordination, the radius, and angles of different components accelerates project completion times and can earn a company big bonuses when they are finished swiftly and precisely. Laser technology is amazing for drawing a straight line across long distances.  This is one reason lasers are preferred by marksmen to target rifles that need to shoot across long distances.  There are gyros to help surveyors find true north, even inside a tunnel or other enclosed spaces where there is no way to see the visibility or weather.   Scanners can digitally record all the information needed at a work site, including the area of a room, distances between different objects, and even obtaining a three dimensional model of the area that can be stored in a computer drafting program to find and look at any issues that might develop.  Surveyors must be able to have their equipment function correctly in rain, wind, shine, and other damp and dark places, depending on the place being measured and recorded.

Our family computer has taken a real beating.  With five children, all wanting computer time, both the mouse and the keyboard have both begun to have challenges.  The mouse seems to have a short in its cord, and the keyboard has had so many things spilled on it that I am surprised that it has not shorted out and exploded.  My wife and I have a laptop and a netbook, and so our home computer is not something that we use very often. We should still take the time to get it back into good repair, and that means buying a new mouse and a new keyboard.

We went to a couple of the local big box stores, and the selection that they have for replacement keyboards and mice is pretty sparse, especially for the prices that they want.  I’m not usually very picky about such things, but the economy has forced me to watch my spending habits. Besides, with the kind of damage that my kids tend to inflict on things, I need something sturdy yet versatile.  Feeling stupid for having wasted the gasoline and the time it took to travel to the various outlets, I decided to do what I should have done from the beginning. I decided to get online and see what online electronic stores have to offer.
